African Beach Games about to kick off in Cape Verde

The road to Qatar begins for the African nations as men and women fight for places at the World Beach Games

The first matches in the African Beach Games are just moments away, as ten teams kick off the qualifying camping for the World Beach Games in Qatar.

The event will run from 19 – 23 June on the pristine shores of Sal, Cape Verde, and kicks off at 10am local time (GMT-1) when Morocco meet Algeria.

The competition, organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), sees ten beach soccer teams (eight men’s and two women’s) from across Africa battle to qualify to the ANOC World Beach Games 2019, to be held in Doha, Qatar.

The eight men’s teams are split into two groups. In Group A, hosts Cape Verde, Algeria, Equatorial Guinea and Morocco will fight for the top spot, while African champions Senegal will battle against Nigeria, Kenya and Djibouti in Group B.

Out of the two women’s teams, Algeria and Cape Verde, only one will make it to the World Beach Games in Qatar. They will play two matches to decide the successful nation.

The men’s competition will be played over all five days, consisting of three days of round robin, followed by the semi-finals and then the final.
