The Cruzmaltino defeated Sampaio Corrêa on penalties to claim their third title
Vasco da Gama have retained the Campeonato Brasileiro de Beach Soccer 2020! In a replay of the 2017 final, the Rio club won a tighter victory than the previous meeting to claim their third national title.
It was a particularly impressive feat as they managed to go undefeated throughout the competition. Anchieta defeated last year’s finalists Flamengo by six goals to five to take third-place.
The Tricolor de São Pantaleão suffered their first defeat of the final stage of the competition at the hands of an imperious Vasco da Gama, with captain Datinha scoring twice, the second coming in extra time, to keep Sampaio Corrêa level, until penalties finally decided the victor.
However, his heroics throughout the tournament was enough for Datinha to get his hands on two trophies at the award ceremony: the MVP and the Top Scorer award!
He did have to share the latter with Vasco da Gama’s Lucão, who had led the scoring race all through the final stage of the competition and he gladly shared the prize after both he and his fellow Brazilian international scored 11 goals.
Lucão’s Vasco teammate Rafa Padilha won Best Goalkeeper, and the Rising Star award went to another Sampaio Corrêa player, Gerlan.
In the third-place play-off, the match started with a special tribute to the Flamengo player Antonio. The defender lost his father, Seu Antonio, on Saturday (11/21) following an illness. His teammate Rodrigo held up a shirt with the number 3, worn by his friend, during the minute’s silence held by the teams.
The game saw the 2018 and 2019 winners of the Best Player awards – Llorenç (Flamengo) and Jordan Santos (Anchieta) – go head to head to vie for bronze, but it was Anchieta from Espirito Santo who came out on top, winning by a single goal.
