Brazil to face Paraguay for gold

The Canarinha gets the chance of defending the medal achieved in last edition of South American Beach Games

A tight victory over archrivals Argentina (3-2) merited Brazil the chance to fight for their second consecutive Gold Medal in the South American Beach Games, defending the one achieved in last edition, played in Montevideo (Uruguay). This time in Manta (Ecuador) Guga’s side will need to beat Paraguay in the final (16h45), after bending in this last stage the Albiceleste, precisely the opponent’s to the Verdeamarela for the Gold in the last Games’ edition. Although missing star Andre on the sand, Bruno Xavier, Jorginho and Sidney got the job done, achieving some registers Vivas’ double could not parallel.

In turn, Paraguay crushed the hosts dream at the penalty shootout of an amazingly intense match. Everything seemed to head for a happy heroic ending for Ecuador when Alava completed an unbelievable come-back from 4-2 to 5-4, scoring the fifth Ecuadorian goal with just 17 seconds to go. But this impressive effort by the Tricolor was left without a prize when Pereira equalized things with the 5-5 which sent the game to the extra time, and subsequently to the penalty shootout. From the fatidic point, the Guarani proved better aimed and finished the Ecuadorian expectations, silencing the packed stands of the Beach Soccer stadium in the El Murcielago Beach.

The last option for the hosts, then, is to fight Argentina for the Bronze medal, in the 3rd/4th place play-off to be played a 15:30 this afternoon (local time).
