Brazil completes improbable comeback for opening win

First day in Recife is surprising as Chile almost upsets the host but Brazil comes back to get first 3 points

The 7-4 win for Brazil over Chile was as hard-fought a match you could ask for, with surprises, a comeback, wonderful goals, and physical play to match. The visitors jumped out to an early three goal advantage, while shutting out their hospitable hosts. Brazil then climbed back and scored three second period goals and eventually shutting out the Chileans in the final frame to secure the win. The win puts Brazil on top keeps them on track for the rest of the tournament as specifically as they go into their next match against Bolivia on Tuesday. There are not many positives anyone can take from a loss but this inspired performance by Chile was memorable and will carry them into their match against Argentina on Tuesday.

Brazil did not pull their punches in the opening minutes and came out firing, but the early attacks did not initially yield any goals. Chile regained their footing and took the shots in stride and mounted offenses of their own but tight defense and the goal posts kept the score level. The Chileans then took a Brazilian turnover and turned it into the first goal of the match. One goal turned into two, which turned into three, as the Lone Stars began taking it to the heavy favourites. The opening 12 minutes ended with the visitors up 3-0. The Brazilians quickly answered in the middle frame, getting their first goal on a spectacular bicycle from Datinha. Chile responded with another goal of their own and the remainder of the period went back and forth with Brazil clawing their way back in it, finishing the period down only one with a score of 4-3 for Chile going into the final frame.

The final period began very tense with the Lone Star needing to hold off the hard-charging hosts. Brazil knew they could overcome the deficit but they expended a lot of energy in the second period making up for lost ground. The two sides tentatively exchanged attacks but nothing dangerous was created for either side in the first minutes of the final period. Rodrigo drew his Canarinho side even with Chile on a phenomenal goal that put the score at 4-all going into the heart of the period. The resolve of both squads was on full display as the physicality escalated and each side refused to back down. The Verde-Amarela saw many more chances as the period wore on but could not capitalize as Chile tried to push their offense, though unsuccessfully. Brazil masterfully tacked on three more late goals while shutting down Chile to clinch the 7-4 win.
