Rodrigo-inspired Brazil beat and eliminate Spain

The previous World Cup runners-up will head home empty handed this time while the South American side marches on

Brazil progressed to the knockout phase with maximum points and eliminated Spain with a 2-1 victory in their final Group C contest. The result ensured Iran went through as the pool’s runners-up.

Less than 90 seconds were on the clock when Rodrigo fired the South Americans ahead, but Raul Merida headed home an equaliser just before the end of the first period.

The brilliance of Spain goalkeeper Dona kept it at 1-1 until little over four minutes from time, when Rodrigo beat his marker and fired home.

Brazil will now meet defending champions Russia in a mouth-watering quarter-final.
