Euro Winners Cup: Only 8 teams left!

Catania, Terracina, Viareggio, Krylya, Lokomotiv, Chargers Baselland, SC Braga and Artur Music square off in quarter-finals

Chargers seal go-through after low start

BSC Chargers Baselland became the first team to earn the quarter-finals of this Euro Winners Cup 2016, following win over Spanish side CD Melistar. After a low start in which Melistar took the lead, the Alpine get hold of the control of the game, and geared up to widen the distance in the score.

Once Chargers found their place on the sand, Melistar could do little to change do course of things. The 0-6 run in the last two periods had the swiss side definitely taking off, and securing a berth amongst the eight best teams in Europe.

SC Braga secures berth amongst the best 8

SC Braga has secured the place amongst the best eight teams in the competition, following a solid, but hard-fought win over consistent Bate Borisov.

SC Braga, as they have been doing repeatedly, scored first to get in control of the game. Leo Martins hit twice to see his team commanding, but the Portuguese team had to face one situation they had not encountered so far : FC Bate Borisov stood up and equalised the score.

The Portuguese champions did not panic, though, and got back to business to claim the advantage once again. The defending adidas Golden Ball, Heimanu Taiarui, swept the Minho Warriors ahead once again, with Be Martins to follow to make it 4-2 by the end of second frame. Portuguese number eleven scored again as the third period began, to finally seal the go-through for his side.

Lokomotive shuts defence down to earn quarter-final berth

Lokomotiv proved today that, besides a blasting offense, they master the art of sound defence, too, not allowing any goal from their opponents Omida Hemako Sztutowo in their round-of-16 clash. The 2013 champions scored three goals and shut their backline down to keep flying in this Euro Winners Cup 2016.

Fernando DDI and Makarov, in the first frame, had Lokomotiv ahead, and, after denying all the chances Omida Hemako Sztutowo tried to build, Lukao finished the game with the 3-0, with just four minutes to go. Lokomotiv joins the best-eight group, and stays alive, trying to get back the crown they clinched in 2013 and lost to compatriots Kristall.

Goals: 1-0: Fernando DDI, min. 8 (1); 2-0: Makarov, min. 1 (1); 3-0: Lukao, min.4 (3)

Artur Music squeezes past Grembach to access next roud

Alpine talent was in hand again today for Artur Music as they managed to secure a place in the quarter-finals, following a narrow win over Poland’s Grembach Lodz. With tow goals each, Dejan Stankovic and Noel Ott, sealed the go-thorugh for the Ukrainian Champions. The match was heavily contested, though, and after Swiss duo gave Artur Music a consistent advantage, Grembach pulled themselves together and tried to counteract, getting close in the score on two occasions, but without earning the equaliser.

Grembach tried everything in the last frame of the game, trying to change the score around. Mitch Day pulled one back for the Poles, but their reaction flew no further than that, and the final whistle sent Artur Music to the quarter-finals of this Euro Winners Cup 2016, where they will face Serie A champions Terracina.

Goals: 1-0: Stankovic, min. 6 (1); 2-0: Ott, min. 1 (1); 2-1: Rangel, min. 11 (2); 3-1: Ott, min. 8 (2); 3-2: Clarke, min.1 (2); 4-2: Stankovic, min. 0 (2); 4-3: Day, min.7 (3)

Terracina heads to quarter-finals after loud win over CSD Djoker

Much at stake there was at the round-of-16 clash between Terracina and CSD Djoker. Terracina was willing to get amongst the best eight of the competition, trying to fly high in this Euro Winners Cup 2016, and CSD Djoker were in front o a historical opportunity for them.

After local hero Paolo Palmacci scored the first goal of the game, anxiety lowered down. Nelito and USA captain Nick Perera added to that opener to make it 3-0 by mid first frame. Cojocari triend to cut the Puntini momentum with the 3-1, but Terracina was not done, yet. By far not…

The Terracinesi took off again with a 0-4 run that left the score faily unbalanced already. There was little to do for Djoker, but the Moldovan side tried, beginning a stroke exchange that gave the remaining minutes some extra action. The referee whistled the game over with Terracina 11-3 ahead, and the Puntini will take on now Artur Music, in the fight for semi-finals.

Gori treble takes Viareggio into last eight

A hat-trick from Gori helped Viareggio into the last eight of the Euro Winners Cup at Falfala Kfar Qassem’s expense.

After early pressure, Ramaciotti opened the scoring four minutes in, and it should have been two soon after, only for Marinai to see his penalty saved.

Gori made amends with a fine finish to put Viareggio in control at the break while Remedi maintained their momentum prior to a low drove from Dino that got Falfala on the board.

Andre struck from halfway in the final period but the midfielder handled to allow Gori a second from the spot.

The Falfala man remained in the action and hammered in his second and third either side of a Genovali free-kick prior to another Gori free-kick as the scoreboard continued to tick.

Aside from late Falfala pressure, Gori’s goal proved the final action of the match, as Viareggio deservedly moved into the last eight where they will face Artur Music.

Sovetov stand firm to end Kristall’s title defence

Euro Winners Cup champions BSC Kristall were sent out in the round of 16 on Thursday after going down 6-5 in a hugely entertaining match-up.

Bruno Xavier had put the Group B winners in front with a penalty and, after Bokinha had briefly levelled, the Portuguese was back on target from kick-off to restore Kristall’s lead.

Bokinha once again proved a frustration for Kristall, while Katarino put Sovetov in front for the first time with a fierce long-range hit. And Kristall were really rocking when Bryshtel added a fourth after a lapse in concentration at the back for the holders.

Filipe then tapped in to finish a fine team move, with Kristall on the ropes going into the final 12 minutes.

Bruno Xavier scored twice in a minute to move Kristall within one and, after intense pressure, Datinha, drew Kristall level.

But the champions continued to pile forward and were left undone by a wonderful turn and finish from Bokinha, who wrapped up his hat-trick and ensured a major upset in a thrilling contest as a result.

Sovetov will face Braga in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Goals: 1-0: Bruno Xavier, min. 10 (1); 1-1: Bokinha, min. 3 (1); 2-1: Bruno Xavier, min. 3 (1); 2-2: Bokinha, min. 2 (1); min. 9; 2-3: Katarino, min. 9 (2); 2-4: Bryshtel, min. 5 (2); 2-5: Filipe, min. 3 (2); 3-5: Bruno Xavier, min. 8 (3); 4-5: Bruno Xavier, min. 8 (3), 5-5: Datinha, min. 3 (3); 5-6: Bokinha, min. 1 (3)

Hosts Catania breeze into Euro Winners Cup quarters

DomusBet Catania moved into the quarter-finals of the Euro Winners Cup courtesy of a 5-3 win over ESC Gyongyos on Thursday.

The two sides were level pegging for much of the first period but Meier’s low drive found the bottom corner and either side of the break both sides remained limited to set-piece attempts and half-chances.

But the scores were levelled through a wonderful Rodrigo strike – hit well within his own area – that rippled the back of the net and Jordan turned the game around when he too found the top corner with a expert left-footed effort.

Palazzolo knocked in Maradona’s cross before the second break but Gyongyos stayed in the contest thanks to Abel’s impressive overhead kick.

Jordan quickly responded by nodding in Rodrigo’s cross before Chiavaro added a fifth, prior to Meier’s second.

But hosts Catania sent the home crowd away happy, seeing out a victory that takes them into the quarter-finals where Chargers Baselland await.

Goals: 0-1; Meier, min. 4 (1); 1-1; Rodrigo, min. 7 (2); 2-1: Jordan, min. 5 (2); 3-1: Palazzolo, min. 0 (2); 3-2 Abel, min. 6 (3); 4-2: Jordan, min. 3 (3); 5-2: Chiavaro, min. 3 (3); 5-3; Meier, min. 3 (3)
