Euro Winners Cup commences with loads of thrill

Sporting Braga, Lokomotiv, Grembach Lodz, Milano and Goldwin Pluss Bodon dominate in the first half of opening day in Catania

SC Braga earns Cups’ 1st win and 3 points

The opening match of this Euro Winners Cup 2014 displayed both offense and defense. The Portuguese club team was able to build on early misses and defenses lapses to play stronger as the game wore on. AO Kefallinia had a great defensive game plan early and maintained a tough back line until SC Braga was able to break open the game. The Greek squad will play on Wednesday against BSC Kristall. SC Braga will next face SK Augur Enemat on Wednesday as well.

The defensive first period began with just that, defense, blocked shots, and saves, but ended with a flurry of three goals, two by the Portuguese side, SC Braga. The Portuguese used spectacular defense and acrobatic goalkeeping to add to their lead, as the middle frame ended up by a score of 4-2. The final frame saw magnificent goals, off of set-pieces and great individual efforts from SC Braga as they went on to win 7-2.

Goals: 1-0: Jordan, min. 3 (1); 1-1: Paris, min. 1 (1); 2-1: B. Novo, min. 0 (1); 3-1: Zé Maria, min. 6 (2); 3-2: Amanaditidis, min. 6 (2); 4-2: B. Novo, min. 6 (2); 5-2: Zé Maria, min. 11 (3); 6-2: Jordan, min. 9 (3); 7-2: B.Novo, min. 5 (3)

Lokomotiv dominates Rostocker despite early setback

Defending champions Lokomotiv Moscow earned the first points in the Euro Winners Cup 2014, following a convincing victory over German champion Rostocker Robben. Despite Rostocker managed to step ahead, it took just a bunch of minutes for Lokomotiv to regain the control of the game and cruise to a solid win.

The opener by Potke, midway first period, caught the Russians by surprise. The equalizer before the first break was key for the Muscovite, as it let them re-begin the match in the second period. And they would not miss this second chance. Madjer swept ‘Loko’ ahead and Makarov, with his first two hits, widened the distance to 1-4 before the second hooter. Bukhlitskiy, from the distance, and Belchior and Makarov again made smashed any chance the Germans may have to go for a comeback.

Rostocker’s last effort, with Thurk’s hit for the 2-7, meant little more than a slight relief for the Deutsche,  as the victory, and the first points in Group G, were already well secured at Lokomotiv’s hands.

Goals: 1-0: Potke, min. 3 (1); 1-1: Belchior, min. 0 (1); 1-2: Madjer, min. 7 (2); 1-3: Makarov, min. 3 (2); 1-4: Makarov, min. 2 (2); 1-5: Bukhlitskiy, min. 9 (3); 1-6: Belchior, min. 7 (3); 1-7: Makarov, min. 4 (3); 2-7: Thurk, min. 1 (3)

Grembach Lodz earns hard fought win

Grembach Lodz found it really hard to bend surprising MFC Spartak Varna, from Bulgaria. Only one goal made the difference, but the 3-2 win for the Polish club gives them three points and the early advantage in their group. On Wednesday, Grembach Lodz will play Marseille Beach Team. The loss for MFC Spartak is tough to swallow as they were up twice in the match, but they will look to rebound on Wednesday against Milano BS.

The opening frame was exciting as both sides exchanged barbs with MFC Spartak 2012 striking first, but Grembach Lodz scored twice to close out the period up by one. Early in the middle frame the momentum swung back to the Bulgarian club, Spartak, as they scored early and held off the Polish side. The all-important final period was chock full of free kicks and scoring opportunities that went unfulfilled until Grembach Lodz scored in the middle of the frame to score the decider, and they went on to win 3-2.

Goals: 0-1: Tsvetkov, min. 11 (1); 1-1: Musik, min. 6 (1); 2-1: Ziober, min. 0 (1); 2-2: Lazarov, min. 5 (2); 3-2: Saganowski, min. 6 (3).

Leo’s poker brings on wonderful comeback by Milano

Four goals by Leo Martins had Milano Beach Soccer leading a brilliant comeback and snatching Marseille Beach Team the points in their debut in this Euro Winners Cup 2014. Despite seeing themselves 3-1 down by mid second period, the rossoneri commanded a laudable reaction that had them upsetting the French in the last seconds of the game.

The game’s most valuable man, Brazilian Leo, opened the score for Milano Beach Soccer, just a couple of minutes into the match. But surprising Marseille, with two goals, turned the score around in just a matter of seconds. Les Bleus regular Mendy widened the gap, making things even more difficult for the Italian Serie A champions.

But Leo’s powder was far from over, and with two more goals, the carioca balanced the score for Milano. With just one minute to go, Amarelle, brought on one of its worldwide-known scissor kicks to push the rossoneri ahead, and within the remaining seconds, Leo widened the score for the final 3-5.

Goals: 0-1: Leo, min. 10 (1); 1-1: Tognarelli, min. 6 (1); 2-1: Mahraoui, min. 4 (1); 3-1: Mendy, min. 8 (2); 3-2: Leo, min. 2 (2); 3-3: Leo, min. 4 (3); 3-4: Amarelle, min. 1 (3); 3-5: Leo, min. 0 (3)

Comeback falls short as Goldwin wins in overtime

Goldwin Pluss Bodon managed to upset Coppa champions Terracina in their debut in the Euro Winners Cup 2014. The thrilling overtime match seemed over after the Italian side was down 3-0, but the ‘Puntini’ turned things around and tied the score at 3 in the final seconds of the third frame. Though Goldwin Pluss Bodon FC would not be denied and finished the match in overtime with an early goal. The win gives Goldwin Pluss two points and a win against a tough foe. The loss pots Terracina BS behind in the group but with plenty of time to catch up.

The first frame was back and forth with both teams trying to get into an offensive rhythm with Goldwin Pluss doing the early damage with two goals. The defense filled second period began with great chances that were continually stopped until Spaca of the Hungarian team scored his third of the match. The final period was exhilarating as Terracina´s Llorenç sent the game into overtime with his 3rd strike. Overtime was thrilling as well but Goldwin Pluss was determined to not be haunted by allowing the comeback and made sure of their win with a great shot from their star Fekete.

Goals: 1-0: Spaca, min. 3 (1); 2-0: Spaca, min. 2 (1); 3-0: Spaca, min. 6 (2); 3-1: Llorenç, min. 1 (2); 3-2: Llorenç, min.11 (3); 3-3: Llorenç, min. 0 (3); 4-3: Fekete, min. 2 (et).
